Volcanoes National Park
“In the heart of Central Africa, so high up that you shiver more than you sweat,” wrote the eminent primatologist Dian Fossey, “are great, old volcanoes towering almost 15,000 feet, and nearly covered with rich, green rainforest – the Virungas.”
Located in northwestern Rwanda and bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park, Volcanoes National Park is renowned for hosting five of the eight Virunga Mountains volcanoes. This mountainous sanctuary boasts a diverse array of forest types across various altitudes, creating distinct habitats for wildlife.
Gorilla safaris, a unique tourist experience reinstated in 1999, are a highlight of Volcanoes National Park. Home to around 300 gentle giants, the park features four habituated gorilla families accustomed to human presence. Tracking these gorillas entails hiking and trekking through the park’s picturesque forest and bamboo environments, offering an unforgettable and enriching experience amidst nature’s wonders.
