Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe, an ancient African rainforest, stands as a bastion of biodiversity and breathtaking natural beauty. Nestled amidst mountains, it hosts a diverse wildlife ensemble, featuring a small yet significant chimpanzee population alongside 12 other primate species, including the Albertine Rift's endemic L’Hoest’s monkey.

Nyungwe Forest National Park, established in 2004, spans nearly 1000 square kilometers, making it a premier destination for chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda. Renowned for its remarkable biodiversity, housing 13 primate species and close to 300 bird species, Nyungwe remains a hidden gem for wildlife enthusiasts. Situated in southwestern Rwanda, bordering Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nyungwe stands out as one of Central Africa’s best-preserved rainforests in mountainous terrain. Serving as a watershed between the Congo River basin to the west and the Nile River basin to the east, this forest is a vital ecosystem, home to 25% of Africa’s primate species, notably a substantial chimpanzee population. Beyond its natural splendor, Nyungwe plays a crucial role as a water source and repository of essential resources crucial for Rwanda’s communities.
